About Off-Campus Housing Near Lesley University

Lesley University is in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with its campus spread along Massachusetts Avenue between Harvard Square and Porter Square. It's a small, practical university known for education, counseling, psychology, and the arts, and a big share of its students are graduate students, many of them working adults. Undergrads are a smaller, tight-knit group, and Lesley's campus housing is small too: about 424 students live in its residence halls and houses on the Doble and South campuses. Lesley encourages first-years to live on campus, and after that, a lot of students head into the regular Cambridge and Somerville rental market. That market is one of the most expensive in the country, and it's crowded: you're competing with Harvard, MIT, and Tufts students plus a lot of young professionals for the same triple-deckers and walk-ups. The good news is that you don't need a car. The Red Line stops at both Harvard and Porter, buses run up and down Mass Ave, and most of what you need is walkable or bikeable, from grocery stores to late-night food. The single most important thing to know is that nearly everything turns over on September 1, and the best apartments are spoken for months before that date.

Lesley University Housing Requirements

Freshman Live-On Requirement

Lesley encourages first-year students to live in on-campus housing to build community, rather than requiring it, and many first-year undergrads do. Policies can change, so check with Lesley's Office of Residence Life if you plan to live off campus as a first-year.

Off-Campus Eligibility

After first year, students can look for housing around Cambridge and Greater Boston, and many do. Graduate students mostly live off campus, although Lesley offers some graduate housing at Mellen House. If you have a housing contract, confirm how and when you can cancel it before you sign a lease elsewhere.

Lease Timing

Cambridge and Somerville leases almost always run 12 months and start September 1. Massachusetts caps what a landlord can collect up front at first month, last month, a security deposit of no more than one month's rent, and a lock-change fee. Since August 1, 2025, if the landlord hired the broker, the landlord pays the fee. Ask for a receipt for your deposit and keep it.

Housing policies change frequently. Always verify current requirements directly with Lesley University before signing a lease.

When to Start Looking for Housing Near Lesley University

Early Searchers

If you're planning to move off campus for September, start looking in January or February. Cambridge and Somerville have a lot of rentals, but the ones near Porter and Harvard in a student-friendly price range get claimed early, often by friends of the current tenants. Pick your roommates first, agree on a per-person budget, and know which Red Line stops you're willing to live near. Touring a few places early, even before you're ready to sign, gives you a feel for what your budget actually buys.

Peak Demand Window

The crush runs roughly from March through May. You'll often need to decide on an apartment the same day you see it, with first month, last month, and a security deposit ready to go. Many landlords want to see income or a co-signer, especially for students. Prices don't usually drop in this window, since graduate students, undergrads, and young professionals are all chasing the same September 1 units.

Last-Minute Options

If you're still looking in July or August, you'll have fewer choices, but they're out there. Look farther up the Red Line toward Alewife, into parts of Somerville and Medford, or along bus lines into Arlington. Summer sublets and rooms in shared apartments where one roommate is leaving are often the best late-season finds. Don't wire money for a place you haven't seen in person.

Neighborhoods Near Lesley University

Porter Square and North Cambridge

Porter Square is right on the Red Line and a short walk from Lesley's buildings along Mass Ave. North Cambridge, just beyond it, is a bit quieter and sometimes cheaper. Rooms in shared apartments here often run roughly $1,300 to $1,900 a month.

Davis Square, Somerville

Davis Square is one Red Line stop past Porter and full of restaurants, bars, and students from Tufts and nearby schools. It's lively, walkable, and popular, so it goes fast. Some streets are an easy walk or bike ride to Lesley.

Harvard Square and Agassiz

The streets around Harvard Square and the Agassiz neighborhood put you close to Lesley's Doble Campus and the Red Line. It's the priciest of the three and has a lot of Harvard grad students, but it's hard to beat for walkability.
