About Off-Campus Housing Near University of Saint Joseph

The University of Saint Joseph is a private Catholic university on Asylum Avenue in West Hartford, Connecticut, not far from the Hartford city line. It's a school of a couple thousand students, with a big share of graduate students in nursing, pharmacy, education, and other health and professional fields, which USJ is known for. Undergrads live in residence halls, suites, and the Village Townhouses on the main campus, and USJ also leases the East Campus Townhouses at 1315 Asylum Avenue to juniors and seniors, furnished and with utilities included. Beyond that, and for most grad students, it's the private market. West Hartford is a well-off, walkable suburb with lively town centers at West Hartford Center and Blue Back Square, but it's pricey and doesn't have a lot of apartments. Across the line, Hartford's West End has big old houses, apartment buildings, and lower rents, and Elmwood, on West Hartford's south side, is a middle ground. CTtransit buses run along Asylum and Farmington Avenues into downtown Hartford, where Union Station has Hartford Line and Amtrak trains. Still, many students, especially those in clinical programs, keep a car.

University of Saint Joseph Housing Requirements

Freshman Live-On Requirement

USJ's residential life pages don't spell out a live-on rule for first-years, so check with USJ Residential Life before you plan on commuting or renting. What is clear: new students choose resident or commuter status when they pay their enrollment deposit through Admissions, and residents on the main campus are required to carry a meal plan.

Off-Campus Eligibility

Juniors and seniors have an in-between option: the East Campus Townhouses at 1315 Asylum Avenue, leased through USJ, come furnished with electric, heat, water, wifi, and parking included. Past that, many upperclassmen and most grad students rent in West Hartford or Hartford. If you've already applied for campus housing, look at USJ's cancellation fees before you sign a private lease.

Lease Timing

West Hartford and Hartford leases are usually 12 months, and many start in June, August, or September, though the market turns over all year. Connecticut has its own deposit and landlord-tenant rules, so read your lease closely for the deposit amount, who pays heat, and move-out terms. Get every agreement in writing and keep copies of rent receipts.

Housing policies change frequently. Always verify current requirements directly with University of Saint Joseph before signing a lease.

When to Start Looking for Housing Near University of Saint Joseph

Early Searchers

If you're moving off campus for junior year, start in the late winter or early spring of sophomore year. Apartments near West Hartford Center go quickly because young professionals want them too. If you're in a clinical program, ask where students usually get placed, since that can change which neighborhood makes sense. Upperclassmen are the best source for landlords worth renting from.

Peak Demand Window

April through July is the busiest stretch for fall rentals. Well-priced units in the West End go within days. Have proof of income or a guarantor, references, and your deposit ready. Larger buildings usually run credit and income checks, while individual owners may be more flexible. Either way, ask about lease length, parking, and whether summer months are included.

Last-Minute Options

Because leases here start throughout the year, you can usually find something even in August. Look at larger complexes with rolling availability, rooms in shared West End houses, and units in Elmwood or Newington. West End rooms also open up when grad students finish their programs. Don't pay for anything before you've seen it.

West Hartford Center

West Hartford's walkable downtown, with Blue Back Square, restaurants, and shops, is a short trip from campus. Apartments here are in demand and pricey. It's great for weekends, less so for budgets.
