About Off-Campus Housing Near University of Hartford

The University of Hartford sits on a large, green campus along Bloomfield Avenue in West Hartford, Connecticut, right where West Hartford, Hartford, and Bloomfield meet, a few miles northwest of downtown Hartford. UHart is a mid-sized private university that includes the Hartt School for music, dance, and theater, and it's strongly residential. All students have to live on campus for their first and second years, so off-campus renters are mostly juniors, seniors, and grad students. The area around campus is a mix of suburban and urban. West Hartford is one of Connecticut's most popular towns, with lively centers like West Hartford Center and Blue Back Square, but it's also pricey and mostly single-family. Hartford's Blue Hills neighborhood next to campus and the West End closer to downtown have more multi-family houses and lower rents, and Bloomfield to the north is quieter and more suburban. CTtransit buses connect campus with downtown Hartford and West Hartford Center, but most off-campus students have a car. Rents are moderate for Connecticut, and leases usually run 12 months. If you're planning to move off campus after sophomore year, picking which of those three towns fits your budget is the first decision.

University of Hartford Housing Requirements

Freshman Live-On Requirement

UHart requires students to live on campus for their first and second years. Incoming first-years and transfers who want to commute can apply for an exception, and the criteria are spelled out on Residential Life's housing requirement page. Don't assume you qualify until Residential Life confirms it.

Off-Campus Eligibility

Rising second-year students who want an exception also have to apply through Residential Life. After two years, juniors and seniors can live off campus, and many rent in West Hartford, Hartford's West End and Blue Hills, or Bloomfield. Grad students aren't covered by the undergrad requirement. Questions go to reslife@hartford.edu.

Lease Timing

Most Hartford-area leases run 12 months and turn over year-round, though summer is the busiest season, and student-oriented units near campus often start in June or August. Read the lease carefully and ask your landlord to explain any charges before paying.

Housing policies change frequently. Always verify current requirements directly with University of Hartford before signing a lease.

When to Start Looking for Housing Near University of Hartford

Early Searchers

If you're a sophomore planning to move off campus for junior year, start looking in the fall or winter. Houses and apartments near campus that have been rented to UHart students before often go to friends of the current tenants, so ask upperclassmen, including in the Hartt School, where many students need space to practice. Settle your group, budget, and car situation before you tour.

Peak Demand Window

The busiest stretch for student rentals runs from roughly February through May, with the general Hartford-area market busiest in summer. Good units near campus or West Hartford Center can go within days. Tour as a group, ask for past heating bills, and have deposits and guarantor information ready. If you're a musician, ask the landlord directly whether practicing is allowed and check the lease for quiet-hours rules. Confirm parking and snow removal, too.

Last-Minute Options

If you're searching late, look at apartment complexes in West Hartford, Bloomfield, Windsor, and Hartford, which tend to have units open up year-round. Downtown Hartford has newer apartment buildings as well, with a longer commute. Rooms in shared houses and sublets also come up. Get any sublet approved by the landlord in writing.
