About Off-Campus Housing Near Stonehill College

Stonehill College is a Catholic liberal arts college on a big, leafy campus in Easton, Massachusetts, about 22 miles south of Boston and right on the edge of Brockton. It's small and built to be residential: Stonehill says 88 percent of its students live on campus in halls, suites, and townhouses. That means the off-campus market here isn't a college-town strip of student rentals. It's a mix of suburban single-family neighborhoods in Easton, older multi-family houses and apartment complexes in Brockton, and quieter options in West Bridgewater, Bridgewater, and Stoughton. Most students who do rent are upperclassmen who want a cheaper setup or a kitchen of their own, or commuters who already live nearby. You'll want a car if you rent. Easton is spread out, and while the commuter rail runs through Brockton and Stoughton, neither station is walkable from campus, though Stonehill's Skyhawk Shuttle and rideshare program cover trips to places like the Stoughton station and Braintree. If you're renting, the calendar is Boston-area normal: plenty of leases still turn over around September 1, and Massachusetts rules on up-front costs and broker fees apply.

Stonehill College Housing Requirements

Freshman Live-On Requirement

Stonehill admits students as either residential or commuter students, and residential students are placed in first-year halls in doubles, triples, or quads. Stonehill doesn't publish a rule that forces every first-year onto campus, but the college strongly encourages it and the vast majority of freshmen live in the dorms. If you're planning to commute from home, confirm your status with Stonehill's Office of Residence Life before you enroll.

Off-Campus Eligibility

About 88 percent of Stonehill students live on campus, and housing for resident students is set up across all four years, from first-year halls to junior and senior suites and townhouses. Moving off campus is possible, but it's a minority choice. If you're a resident student thinking about leaving, talk to Residence Life before you sign anything so you understand how your housing charges and meal plan are affected.

Lease Timing

Most apartments in Easton and Brockton rent on 12-month leases, and many start September 1 or June 1. Massachusetts caps what a landlord can collect up front at first month, last month, a security deposit of no more than one month's rent, and a lock-change fee. Since August 1, 2025, whoever hires the broker pays the broker fee, so if the landlord listed with a broker, you usually don't pay it.

Housing policies change frequently. Always verify current requirements directly with Stonehill College before signing a lease.

When to Start Looking for Housing Near Stonehill College

Early Searchers

If you know you're moving off campus for junior or senior year, start looking in February or March. Easton doesn't have a lot of rental inventory, so the few houses and apartments close to campus go to people who plan ahead. Groups of three or four splitting a house in Easton or West Bridgewater should line up roommates first, then tour. Landlords in the suburbs often want a co-signer or proof of income, so get your paperwork ready early.

Peak Demand Window

April through July is when most students and young professionals are signing for fall, and it's also when Boston-area families move. Brockton has more inventory than Easton, so if you strike out near campus, widen your search there. Expect competition for anything renting under the local average, and be ready to put down first month, last month, and a deposit when you apply.

Last-Minute Options

In August, what's left tends to be larger apartment complexes in Brockton and Stoughton, rooms in shared houses, or units that start mid-month. Month-to-month rooms and sublets from students who studied abroad or graduated in December can also fill a gap. If you're really stuck, ask Residence Life whether any on-campus spaces are open before you sign something you don't love.

Neighborhoods Near Stonehill College

Easton and North Easton

Easton is the town Stonehill sits in, and it's mostly single-family homes, farms, and quiet roads. Rentals are limited, so it's usually a house split among friends or an in-law apartment. It's the shortest drive to class, but you'll pay suburban prices and you'll need a car.

Brockton

Brockton borders campus to the west and is where you'll find the most apartments and the lowest rents nearby. There's a mix of older triple-deckers and newer complexes, plus commuter rail service into Boston from Brockton station. Some blocks are much quieter than others, so visit at night before signing.

West Bridgewater and Bridgewater

These towns sit south and southwest of campus, a short drive away. You'll find smaller apartment buildings, duplexes, and house shares, and Bridgewater has a college-town feel thanks to Bridgewater State. It's a good middle ground on price and noise.
