About Off-Campus Housing Near Bennington College

Bennington College is a small, progressive liberal arts college on a hilltop campus of former farmland just outside the village of North Bennington, in the southwest corner of Vermont near the New York and Massachusetts borders. It's famous for self-designed academic plans, a strong arts culture, and Field Work Term, a winter stretch when students leave campus to work or intern. Enrollment is under 1,000, and nearly everyone lives in college housing, which the college treats as central to a Bennington education. Student houses, like the white clapboard Colonial Houses around Commons Lawn and newer ones like Fels, Noyes, and Sawtell, are the center of social life, with House Chairs and weekly Coffee Hours. Upperclass students can apply for Longmeadow, an intentional community on campus, or Welling Townhouse, a 14-person co-op in North Bennington, and six seniors a year win a lottery spot in Shingle Cottage. Because nearly everyone lives on campus, there's very little student rental market in town. The few students who live off campus, with college approval, rent in North Bennington, downtown Bennington, or nearby towns, where rents are moderate but inventory is thin and a car is close to essential.

Bennington College Housing Requirements

Freshman Live-On Requirement

First-years at Bennington live on campus in the student houses, typically with one or more roommates, and the college treats the residential experience as an integral part of every student's education. Bennington's housing pages don't spell out exactly how many years you're required to live on campus, so check with the Office of Student Life for the current rule.

Off-Campus Eligibility

Nearly all students live in college housing, so living off campus is rare. Bennington lists an Off-Campus Housing Application among its housing forms, so you need to apply and get approval before renting. Upperclass students can also apply for Longmeadow or Welling Townhouse, and Shingle Cottage is for six seniors picked by lottery.

Lease Timing

If you're approved to live off campus, most Bennington-area leases run 12 months. Read your lease carefully for the deposit amount, who pays heat, and who handles snow removal, and get everything in writing. Keep Field Work Term in mind, since you may be away for part of the winter.

Housing policies change frequently. Always verify current requirements directly with Bennington College before signing a lease.

When to Start Looking for Housing Near Bennington College

Early Searchers

If you're thinking about living off campus, start by talking to the Office of Student Life in the fall or early winter and file the Off-Campus Housing Application well before housing selection. Once you're approved, start looking in the spring. Bennington's rental market is small, and apartments near North Bennington or downtown don't come up often, so ask around, check local listings, and reach out to landlords early.

Peak Demand Window

The busiest stretch runs from late spring through summer, when year-round residents move and seasonal rentals shift. Tour in person, since much of the local housing is older homes, and look closely at heating systems, insulation, windows, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Ask how the unit handles Vermont winters and whether the driveway gets plowed. If you'll be away for Field Work Term, ask whether the landlord is fine with that.

Last-Minute Options

If you're late, try rooms in shared houses, short-term furnished rentals, or apartments in nearby towns like Shaftsbury, Pownal, or even Williamstown, Massachusetts, if you have a car. For most students, though, the easiest backup is simply campus housing, so check with Student Life about availability before you scramble for a lease.
